Choice matters

5/31/2013

We all like choosing and having a choice rather than being told "this is the way it is." #Students are the same - choices relating to content and process of learning increases engagement and motivation. In-class examples:
- Choice of reading material that address curriculum objectives
- students choose from a preestablished list of ways to demonstrate their understanding of an assignment.

According to research "it seems like synapses that have recently been strengthened are peculiarly vulnerable, more stimulation can actually wipe out the effects of learning." The Brain-targeted Teaching model recommends including new bits of related information to study sessions. Full article here: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/05/130529144327.htm

From middle school Spanish teacher, "Environment matters; nothing in my classroom is done without intention. From the high -frequency word wall to phonetic and grammatical charts; the poster of the Alhambra, the Spanish calendar, and the Spanish word of the day to focus on, if their attention wanders from the lesson at hand.

Teachers, try to plan your physical #learning environment, as you establish the goals and objectives for each new learning unit.  It will attract #students' interest in the lesson, give them a sense of comfort and belonging, and ultimately help to influence attention and engagement in learning.
